Makihata is a unique crop rotation farming method that was developed on the Oki Islands. The land was separated into four fields of farmland and pastureland and rotated regularly. The method was devised as a way to effectively use the meager soil and limited flat land on the islands. At Onimai, you can see the remnants of the stone walls that were used to separate the fields.
