Culture Sites and Facilities / Nishinoshima Town
This canal cuts through the center of Nishinoshima Island, connecting the inner sea and the Sea of Japan. Before the canal was made in 1915, the boats had to be laboriously transported over land in order to reach the Sea of Japan from the inner sea. The surrounding town, Funakoshi (meaning "boat crossing"), is said to have been named after this practice.
