Lifestyles and Traditions - Festivals
Held on May 3 of even-numbered years at Mizuwakasu Shrine (Goka area, Okinoshima Town)
This festival is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property by Shimane Prefecture. Yama-hiki shinji is a ritual in which young children (around the age of 7) from the Goka area pull a float that resembles Mount Hōrai (a legendary dwelling of immortals), decorated with cranes and turtles (symbols of longevity); it is held to pray for sound health. In addition, kagura shinto dances bearing traits from ancient dances, the shishimai lion dance, and yabusame horseback archery are also performed.
