Unique Ecosystem - Insects
This endemic ground beetle is found only in the Oki Islands. It is a subspecies of the Daisen-osamushi ground beetle, which is found on the mainland of the San'in Region (Shimane and Tottori Prefectures). Many osamushi ground beetles have degenerated rear wings and are unable to fly; as a result, their habitats are separated by mountains and rivers, allowing a great deal of variation from region to region.
The Oki-osamushi ground beetles are often found in forests on Dōgo Island, but in Dōzen they are found near the coasts. They are about 19–24 mm in length, with a copper red back and green on their sides.
