Local Junior High School Students Intern at Geopark Entô Office
From November 13 to 15, two students from Ama Junior High School came to intern at Geopark Entô Office for three days. The two students were involved in a wide variety of activities, from everyday tasks such as ordering supplies and cleaning the office to brainstorming temporary exhibits and supporting guided tours. Amid it all, the students put their utmost into supporting guests. Students expressed interests and skills such as “I want to use my fishing knowledge with guests!” and “I like talking to people!” and, after utilizing these interests and skills, considered how they could be better guides. Finally, students joined a guided tour and received hands-on experience at showing guests around.
When the students were asked their thoughts after the internship, they talked about the things they had realized, learned, thought about, and felt. Comments included “I tried to explain things in a way that would connect with the guests’ interests. When I talk to people from now on, I won’t just focus on myself but will listen to what the other person is saying as we talk.” and “It was difficult to express my thoughts to other people. Also, the explanations from the tour guides were passionate, and that has taught me what I want to sound like when I want to express something.” We hope that this internship is both a hint and a chance for the students to consider how they live their lives.
Additionally, having local children come intern with us was the perfect chance for us to let them learn about the area that they live in and increase their interest in nature, the environment, and the Earth.
