Geohistory - Rocks from Volcanic Islands Period
Geosites / Okinoshima Town
This plateau in the Misaki area of Dōgo Island is the location of the Oki Airport. It was created by lava flow from volcanic activity around 500 thousand years ago. The lava flowed smoothly from the volcano, creating a wide, flat land.
The steep cliff below Saigō-misaki Lighthouse is the wall of a volcanic crater. Half the crater was blown away in a steam explosion, and its remainder now looks like a giant bowl cut in half.
