Unique Ecosystem - Insects
In Hokkaido and the Tohoku region (northeast Japan), this cicada is mainly found in plains; west of central Honshu, it is found in the lower parts of mountainous regions at elevations of 500–1,000 m above sea level. However, on Dōgo in the Oki Islands, it has a unique distribution, inhabiting areas from 300 m above sea level.
Its body is 40–46 mm long and yellow-brown to orange-brown in color. It can be seen on the Japanese beech (Fagus crenata) or the mizunara oak (Quercus crispula), but is most often found on conifers such as the Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora). It is seen from mid-July to mid-September.
