Tamawakasu-mikoto Shrine is the main general shrine of the Oki Islands. Every year on June 5th the Gorei-furyū Festival is held, which is one of the three biggest festivals on Dōgo Island. During the festival, an impressive event takes place where eight sacred horses carrying the gods from eight areas gallop into the shrine to pay their respects. The giant tree on the grounds of the shrine is called Yao-sugi Japanese Cedar and is over 1000 years old.
