The Oki salamander (Hynobius okiensis) is an endemic species only found on Dōgo Island. The species has attracted attention as it sheds light on the evolutionary process. In 2005, the Oki Islands were listed by the Alliance for Zero Extinction as the last habitat of an endangered species (one of 595 places and 790 species designated worldwide). Oki salamanders live in water when young and on land as adults. In Nakatani, you might find their young among the moss or rocks in the river.
