Revalidation of the Oki Islands area as a UNESCO Global Geopark

After the UNESCO Global Geoparks on-site mission from September 4 to 8, 2022, the Oki Islands area was revalidated as a UNESCO Global Geopark during a UNESCO Global Geoparks Council meeting held on December 7 through 9 (UNESCO website regarding revalidation results).

The following is a comment from Board Chairman Ikeda of the Oki Islands Geopark Management Bureau’s Board of Directors.

After undergoing a UNESCO Global Geoparks on-site revalidation mission held from September 4 to 8, 2022, the Oki Islands area has been revalidated as a UNESCO Global Geopark. 

This revalidation is a result of the support and cooperation of all parties involved, not least among them our island residents. I would once again like to express my gratitude to everyone and ask for your continued support and cooperation as we at the Oki Islands Geopark Management Bureau receive the mission results with a level head and focus on further developing the tourism area built on local resources of the Oki Islands, a designated UNESCO Global Geopark.
